William R. Mayfield, MD, FACS.

Dr. Mayfield has experience developing instrumentation and techniques in Video Assisted Cardiac Surgery and Thoracic Surgery. He hosts courses for VATS Lobectomy in Marietta, GA, and around the US.

William R. Mayfield, MD FACTS ::

Dr. Mayfield is Board Certified in Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. He has limited his practice to General Thoracic Surgery, specializing in the surgical treatment of diseases of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum, and chest wall. He is a member of Thoracic Surgery Associates, PC, with Drs. Houck and Luu, located in Marietta and Atlanta, GA. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. He is a member of the Southern Thoracic Surgical Association, and a founding member of the International Society of Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (ISMICS.) Dr. Mayfield chaired the ISMICS international meeting in Atlanta in 1999. He has served as Chief of Surgery for WellStar Kennestone Hospital.

His research and development efforts have focused on thoracoscopy instruments and innovative cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures. He assembled a distinguished faculty and taught a monthly course on video assisted cardiac surgery. This course was attended by over three hundred surgeons from Asia, Europe, and the US over a year and a half.

Dr. Mayfield co-chaired the world’s first international meeting on Techniques in Video-Assisted Cardiac Surgery, held in Boston. He has published articles in several journals and written chapters for textbooks in cardiac surgery. He holds patents for endoscopic devices.
